Hey Harmony: My Best Friend and I Always Disagree

Hayley.jpg

Hey Harmony,

I’ve had the same best friend since I was five, and now we’re both fourteen. We have so much fun together, and I always feel like I can tell her everything, but the problem is we almost never see eye to eye. Sometimes I wish we could agree and stop arguing! Things are getting extra heated now that the 2020 Presidential elections are on the horizon. I know we’re too young to vote, but we're both still really passionate anyway. She’s constantly trying to convince me why her candidate is better, and while I disagree, I just don’t want to fight anymore.

Sincerely,

Constantly Clashing

Harmony:

Oh, girl, I gotchu on this one! My best friend Sky and I alllllways disagree on stuff. She thinks Pikachu is the best Pokemón, when everybody knows the best Pokemón is Charizard. I mean, obvi! She thinks Harry Potter is stupid, but I love Harry Potter. I insist Ariana Grande is the greatest pop star alive, while she insists it’s Taylor Swift! Sometimes we bicker for hours and, yeah, it’s pretty much a waste of time. My advice to you is twofold. First of all, as soon as any argument stops being fun, take a cool-off period and change the subject. Make a list of things you do agree on (you think she’s the best, and she thinks you’re the best, after all!) and consult it whenever arguments are getting heated or out of control. Second of all, stay away from sensitive topics. There are spouses who simply don’t discuss politics, because it causes too many problems! And one last tip: arguing can be healthy, and even fun, as long as everybody plays fair. Stay away from personal attacks and your friendship will be fine!
