Ava Cardoso-Smith: The 411
Introducing Ava Cardoso-Smith, one of the stars of our newest show, Stuck! We got to chat with her on set and got the full 411. Here’s what we learned:
What was your favorite Stuck scene to shoot?
Probably where I had to scream in excitement for Tara and Gerald. It was really embarassing but really funny to shoot.
Tell us a bit about your character:
Her name is Lottie and she is basically a mean girl!
How did you get into acting?
I started acting when I was really young. I did YADA [Youth Actors Dramatic Academy], and from then on I continued to do musical theatre throughout high school.
And you’re still in school now. What’s it like juggling school and your acting career?
Its difficult juggling school and acting. I go to school full time. Most people i work with are homeschooled so it’s very weird for me to go from my school life to set, where it’s a drastically different environment. But it’s actually kind of fun to juggle the two—both my career and my education are extremely important to me.
Are you going to college?
Yes! I’m going to NYU to study music.
What do you love about being on set?
The snacks…but also the bonds you make with the cast. I know that’s a cliché answer!
What do you hate about being on set?
I hate being around Hailey [Sani]. Just kidding, I love her. And there’s nothing I hate about being on set.
Who is a figure from history that you admire/look up to?
There’s a woman named Bessie Smith who was a successful jazz singer in the early 1900s. She thrived in an industry that was dominated by men, and I think that’s really impressive. She was a pioneer of jazz music, and was a big inspiration to Janis Joplin, who I’m a big fan of. Bessie had a low tenor voice, which I have too, so I feel inspired by her and her success against all odds.
If you could be another character on a Brat show who would it be and why?
I would want to be Autumn from Dirt and Total Eclipse. Lilia Buckingham is actually my God sister, and we love each other.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully on tour and completely independent from a label. Mostly I want to be happy. Simple as that.
What is your very favorite thing to do when you’re not on set or working?
I love to sing!
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Portugal, beacuase all my family is from there.
Favorite show currently?
Probably The Office or Parks and Rec.
What is your favorite youtube video that you’ve posted?
I’m actually not a YouTuber. Everyone here has like five hundred thousand followers or more, but I’m just not an influencer! But let me tell you, I have so much respect for influencers, especially after meeting so many on set. It’s a full time job and there is so much that goes into it. Hailey [Sani] is always editing her videos in her free time, and I’m always doing school stuff. So, we live very different lives but have a cool connection. It’s been cool to learn what it’s really like to be an influencer.
If you could be someone else for a day who would it be and why?
Probably Jimmi Hendrix. I’d like to be a guitar God and I’d love to know what it’s like to create some of the best music of all time. Who in the world is more naturally creative than he is? I want to know what it’s like to be so destined to do one thing.
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
My mom...she’s my day-to-day BFF for life.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint chocolate chip.
What’s your favorite ride at Disneyland?
One last fun fact?
I have seven siblings, but none fo them are full siblings. Some of them are step siblings and some of them are half siblings, and I’m basically right in the middle, age-wise. It’s really fun, I get the benefits of being an only child but still have a big family!
