Hey Harmony: I have a crush...

REAL-LIFE-HEY-HARMONY-.jpg

Hey, Harmony

I have a crush on this really nice guy. I told him how I felt about a month ago and we don't really talk much in real life anymore, but we text a lot. He doesn't like me back. But then, on the day before Valentine's Day, his best friend told me he liked me! I said I didn't like him back in that way, but we’re pretty close friends and now everything feels awkward. I don't really know what to do in this situation. Please help!

Sincerely,

Feeling awkward

Hey girl,

I totally get why you feel awkward. Hopefully I can make some of that awkwardness go away with my brilliant advice skills. Here’s the thing: when we’re young, crushes seem like a really big deal, but they’re actually not! Having a crush on someone is normal…all it really means is you like them an extra amount, it doesn’t (and shouldn’t) have to be so dramatic. So you extra like this guy, but he doesn’t extra like you back, and his best friend extra likes you, but you don’t extra like him back…that’s all okay! You don’t ever need to pretend to be into someone you’re not into, and one day all three of you will find the person you’re meant to be with. Maybe you’ll all still be friends by then, or maybe you won’t be, but either way, none of you will be dwelling on the awkwardness of these feelings. One parting word of wisdom: your crushes don’t define who you are! You are so much more than who you have a crush on, the same way you’re so much more than your favorite ice cream flavor!
