Hey Harmony: I have a friend who cheats on tests...
I have a friend in school who cheats on basically every test and quiz. Once, I let her cheat off my page because she said she needed my help, but I don’t want to do that again. I know cheating is wrong, and helping her cheat is wrong, but I want to be a good friend and I don’t want her to get an F because I didn’t let her copy my work. I also don’t want her to be mad at me. What should I do?
Hmmmm, let me think…
Hey there! I feel you, the struggle is real. You want to do what’s right, but you also want to be a good friend. Well, good news! In this situation—and, like, most situations, I think—doing the right thing and being a good friend are one in the same. Here’s what I mean: if you don’t let your friend cheat, she will have to study on her own and actually learn a thing or two. You can pull her aside and tell her that you can’t let her copy your work anymore, but you’re happy to help her study. As a friend, that’s the very best thing you can do! It’s way better than letting her cheat off you, which is actually doing her a huge disservice. When you tell her how it’s gonna be from now on, do it nicely, with love and compassion. Here’s the thing: she may get mad anyway. If she’s a real friend, she will eventually get over her anger and come around to seeing how what you did was awesome. Stay strong, you can do this!
